Cookbook & Recipes

The Cookbook is where your household keeps its recipes. Save family favorites, import recipes from the web, scale them to any number of servings, send the ingredients straight to a shopping list, and plan them into your week with the Meal Planner. Because cookbooks live inside your Space, everyone in the household shares the same collection.

Cookbooks

A Cookbook is a collection of recipes. You start with a Default Cookbook ("This is where your recipes will be stored"), and you can create as many more as you like to keep things organized — for example a "Baking" book, a "Weeknight Dinners" book, or one per family member.

Creating a Cookbook

  1. Open the Cookbook section.
  2. Tap Create Cookbook.
  3. Give it a name, choose a type (Generic, Breakfast, Dinner, Dessert, Baking, and more), add an optional description and icon.
  4. Set it Public or Private within your Space.
  5. Save.

Editing or Deleting

Open a cookbook's menu to Edit (rename, change type, description, or icon) or Delete it.

Heads up: Deleting a cookbook also deletes every recipe inside it. This can't be undone.

Adding Recipes

There are three ways to get a recipe into a cookbook.

Create from scratch

Tap New Recipe and fill in the details yourself (see Recipe Details below).

Import from a URL (Premium)

Paste a link to a recipe webpage and Famn extracts the title, ingredients, and steps for you. Great for capturing recipes you find online.

Import from an image (Premium)

Photograph a recipe card, cookbook page, or handwritten note — Famn reads the text and turns it into an editable recipe.

URL and image import are Premium features. You can always type recipes in by hand on a free account.

Recipe Details

When creating or editing a recipe, you can set:

FieldDescription
Title & DescriptionThe recipe name and a short summary.
PhotoAn image shown at the top of the recipe.
YieldsHow many servings the recipe makes (the base for scaling).
Prep / Cook / Total TimeTimings in minutes.
IngredientsEach with an amount, unit, and optional notes (e.g. "chopped").
Ingredient GroupsOrganize ingredients into sections like "Dough" or "Sauce".
InstructionsStep-by-step, and can be reordered by dragging.
Type & CuisineCategory (Breakfast, Dinner, Dessert, Pasta…) and cuisine.
TagsLabels like Quick, Healthy, Kid-Friendly, Vegetarian, Gluten-Free.
SourceWhere the recipe came from (kept automatically for imports).

Each ingredient can be marked "Ignore this ingredient in the shopping list" — handy for pantry staples like salt and water that you don't need to buy.

Viewing & Cooking

  • Scale servings — adjust the serving count and every ingredient amount recalculates automatically.
  • Step-by-step mode — a full-screen cooking view that shows one instruction at a time, with adjustable text size so you can read it from across the kitchen.
  • Favorites — tap the heart to Add to favorites for quick access later.
  • Estimated nutrition & cost (Premium) — see approximate nutrition (per serving, per 100g, or total) and an estimated cost based on product prices. Both are estimates and shown with a disclaimer.

Sending Ingredients to a Shopping List

From any recipe, tap Add to Shopping List:

  1. Choose which ingredients to include (ingredients marked to ignore are skipped).
  2. Pick which shopping list to add them to.
  3. Confirm — the amounts are added at the current serving size.

This is the quickest way to turn "let's make this" into a ready-to-shop list. (See the Shopping List article for more.)

Sharing & Organizing

  • Share a recipe — generate a link to send to anyone, with a friendly pre-written message.
  • Move a recipe — relocate it to a different cookbook with Move Recipe to Cookbook.
  • Search — find recipes by name, description, or tag from the search bar in a cookbook.

How Recipes Connect to the Rest of Famn

  • → Shopping List — add a recipe's ingredients to any list in one step.
  • → Meal Planner — drop a recipe into a day and meal slot; it scales to the servings you set. (See the Meal Planner article.)
  • → Your Space — every cookbook, recipe, and meal plan is shared with your household automatically.

Tips

  • Mark pantry staples to ignore so your shopping lists only contain what you actually need to buy.
  • Use ingredient groups for anything with multiple components (a main + a sauce) — it makes both cooking and shopping clearer.
  • Tag generously. Tags like Quick or Kid-Friendly make weeknight planning much faster.
  • Import once, reuse forever. Pull in a recipe from a URL, tidy it up, and it's yours to scale, plan, and shop from.
